Analysis

Oh, is it going to be close. I’m giving the slight edge to The Hobbit over Django Unchained, but buckle up. This looks to be quite a horse race.
Looking at the new releases, Texas Chainsaw 3D has had pretty minimal marketing despite a horror film not entering the marketplace for quite some time. The Devil Inside scored well on this weekend last year, but that had much stronger marketing. Look for mid level results.
The same cannot be said for Promised Land, reviews indicate another preachy political mess that audiences just don’t have any “patients” for. Again, like all other entries like these, expect the film to flop considerably.
Les Miserables is set to post a decent hold. Film had pretty strong holiday grosses, so it’s place as one of history’s most successful musicals is well assured.
Lincoln has quite a few Oscar nominations to look forward to, and will draw close to the 145 million domestic mark.
All the best,

Sensei White Lotus

January releases being ponderous bores and titanic flops? Who would have guessed?!

Poor January… all those good movies from December are still out and its offerings are so much dross. Of course, the TV ads for Promised Land are positvely breathless; carrying that pungent stench of desperation.

I think “Zero Dark Thirty” will go big. Other than that, frame does look really soft.

I’m not so sure. Even people who’ve been drinking gallons of Kool-Aid aren’t too thrilled with it because it apparently spends much of its running time about A Brave Woman’s Noble Fight as opposed to, you know, the SEALs.

And starting with a limited release, that buzz is going to get out long before the movie gets around. I think it’s very much going to be The Hurt Locker’s poor cousin.
