Analysis

Last week threw a lot of uncertainty into the market. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters looks to reestablish order.
Hunters has a just crazy enough concept to work, and unlike Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, doesn’t have any real life icons in connection. Of course, anything goes in late January when the box office frame can be pretty unpredictable. The star power for Hunters is impressive with Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, and marketing suggests they work well together. Should be able to overcome the late January blues.
Zero Dark Thirty will again impress as it stays on a The Help-like box office pace. Mama will take the usual horror film second weekend nosedive. Parker features Jason Statham, but his films in January aren’t really box office trailblazers. He also has a much less screen count this time (2,200+) compared to his previous offering The Mechanic (2,700+). Not expecting high results here.
Movie 43 is raunchy, features multiple directors, is raunchy, and does boast some names. Oh, and did we mention the film is raunchy? That seems to be all the film’s marketing can offer. Film would do better if if was more of the “spoof” variety like Meet The Spartans, which do very well in late January. Sadly, film seems like a studio experiment just trying to make what it can. Some impressive cast additions with Gerard Butler and Kate Winslet, the rest though definitely have their share of recent box office troubles making for an uneven sell. Going with the low opening here.
The Silver Linings Playbook will remain solid as it breaks the 65 Million domestic mark.
Have a great weekend,

Sensei White Lotus
