Analysis

Identity Thief pretty much has the frame to itself, but trouble’s brewing. A massive blizzard looks to blanket the east coast, and early complaints are emerging about the film’s blatant attempt to make fun of what it calls “traditional Americans.” Considering how this group falls into the film’s target range, results could be disastrous.
Nevertheless, I think Thief can pull a high enough Friday opening to set a 20+ weekend. We’ll have to see how word of mouth progresses to get the final weekend result. I don’t see Side Effects heading anywhere. Film’s marketing has been confusing, and this time of year isn’t exactly screaming for a medical drama vehicle.
Again, look for a decent weekend hold for Silver Linings Playbook. Film looks to position itself within striking distance of the 100 million domestic mark. If the film should reach that chapter, it would add yet another box office achievement to Jennifer Lawrence’s already impressive box office resume. Oscar buzz also continues to work in her full favor. She may even win.
Warm Bodies should pull a decent drop from last weekend. Have to feel for this film, was up against the Super Bowl and now faces a potential east coast blizzard. Talk about facing box office challenges. Film does have very positive word of mouth on its side, however, and should hold its own.
Have a great weekend,

Sensei White Lotus
