Analysis

After last week threw uncertainty into the market, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters did reestablish order.
Hunters was a film that had a just enough crazy concept to work, and unlike Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, didn’t have any real life icons in connection. Impressive call considering I just missed the exact mark on the top spot position.
Zero Dark Thirty did again impress as it stayed on a The Help-like box office pace. Mama did take the usual horror film second weekend nosedive. Parker and Movie 43, not surprisingly, came in low. What was interesting is that both films even came in under my lowball estimates. That’s not too encouraging to their future box office futures.
The real impressive box office performer was Silver Linings Playbook. Film came in #4 with 9.4 million (only a 12 percent drop).
Playbook has banked in over 68 million domestic and looks to continue strong in coming weeks. The reason? I’d say it’s easily the strong draw of Jennifer Lawrence, who continues to impress with her box office resume. Her previous entries: The Hunger Games, House At The End Of The Street, also did very well last year. It’s rare for actresses to string together hits when they’re one of the major starring roles. Even rarer to do so over the course of 4-5 films straight. Jennifer Lawrence is on that pace now.
Have a great week,

Sensei White Lotus
