Analysis

Huge surprise with Mama taking the weekend. While the film taking the top spot wasn’t unlikely, the strength of its over-performance was. The reason being the terrible results brought in by newcomers Broken City and The Last Stand. City and Stand’s loss was easily Mama’s gain. Zero Dark Thirty came in as expected (box office wise) for a solid runner up finish. Film has started out on a The Help-like box office run.
Mark Wahlberg did return in Broken City, but was without Kate Beckinsale (who’s very strong in January releases). Overall, the film flopped considerably and audience buzz is also dangerously low. Mama, meanwhile, may have been a stronger film than the critics were letting on. Film did manage to cross, just barely, into “fresh” territory on Rotten Tomatoes late in the week. Audience reviews were low though however, with only a B- Cinemascore. So what gives? Perhaps the addition of just having strong newcomer Jessica Chastain was enough to power ahead grosses. If so, that says a lot about her future box office prospects. Having the two top films at the box office is no small feat either.
Then there was easily the weekend’s biggest disappointment, The Last Stand. I showed considerable faith in Arnold’s built in audience, and the film did turn out some very positive buzz from theater crowds. Alas, we have another Dredd on our hands. Solid audience reviews, but terrible opening box office. Film is a considerable flop, coming in way under even the lowest of box office projections. Film did so badly that other predictors did manage to get the better of me on this call. I applaud them on the solid call.
As predicted, The Silver Linings Playbook did do very well off its theater expansion. Film even rose to the #3 spot. That says a lot about Jennifer Lawrence’s box office strength, who continues to impress.
Have a great week,

Sensei White Lotus

So grade inflation has invested movies as well now? Perhaps I was an underachiever, but I was usually quite pleased with a B-. Or have movie reviews started to be like video game reviews where anything under a 9.5/10 is complete garbage?
