Analysis…
Was very confident in Zero Dark Thirty’s momentum after its Oscar nominations. Turned out to be the case. To review, unlike previous years, the Oscar nod actually helps Zero’s box office opening considerably. Also, as predicted, Zero already passed The Hurt Locker (this film making team’s previous work) in box office. The Hurt Locker earned over 17 million dollars during its entire box office run in 2009. Zero will now continue on to become one of the year’s highest grossing dramas.

Looking at the other new releases, got a lot of heat for picking A Haunted House to better Gangster Squad. Well, turned out to be one of the only prediction sites to have that right. To review, Haunted was perfectly timed to grab comedy audiences. Marketing was also very clever and provided a perfect companion to Zero’s serious narrative.

So also as predicted, Gangster Squad disappointed. I love the project’s concept and remain a sucker for old school gangster epics. The cast however was made of recent box office dead weights: Josh Brolin (Jonah Hex), Sean Penn (Fair Game), and Ryan Gosling (Ides Of March). Only the film’s female lead, Emma Stone, had any box office clout. Film didn’t impress even with a healthy screen count (3000+), no question a missed opportunity.

Rounding out the predictions: Lincoln, off its Oscar nominations, did break the 150 million domestic mark.

Have a great week,
