Analysis…
Unlike many (actually more like all) other prediction sites, managed to call the correct finishing order of #1-#5. Identity Thief defied all sorts of trends. Despite a huge snowstorm burying the Northeast (including Boston and New York City), Thief came out big. Quite a feat. Opening even beat Bridesmaids’ initial opening. Thief’s word of mouth is nowhere near Bridesmaid’s level of positive buzz, though. Side Effects came in as predicted, scoring another win over the other prediction sites (all other site predictions averaged around the 11-13 OW range). Not perfect, but I guess a win’s a win.

Nevertheless, Thief faces all sorts of challenges going forward. Early complaints did emerge of the film’s so called depiction of what it calls “traditional Americans.” Never good. On top of that, huge box office competition from A Good Day to Die Hard and others opening this week. A huge second week drop looks likely.

Again, did see a decent weekend hold for Silver Linings Playbook. Film now within striking distance of the 100 million domestic mark. If the film should reach that chapter, it would add yet another box office achievement to Jennifer Lawrence’s already impressive box office resume. Oscar buzz also continues to work in her full favor. She may even win.

Warm Bodies did pull a decent drop from last weekend. Have to feel for this film, was up against the Super Bowl and then faced an east coast blizzard. Talk about facing box office challenges. Film does have very positive word of mouth on its side, however, and did very well under the circumstances.
