Analysis

Action fans love the Die Hard series (including myself), but word of mouth was nowhere near as positive as the previous Die Hard entries. Film came in much lower than expectations. Still, not a terrible opening like Bullet To The Head or The Last Stand was. So there’s that. Overall, Die Hard’s under-performance was Identity Thief’s gain. Film picked up quite a few unexpected audiences to pull in a 30+ weekend. Quite impressive for a second week.
Actually did well calling Safe Haven. Early critical reviews are weak, but knew that wouldn’t matter. A Nicholas Sparks film on Valentine’s Day is a sheer lock to pull stronger box office numbers early. It also was the strongest date movie on the most popular holiday for couples. As expected, the real wild care was Beautiful Creatures and boy was it ever. Film had better reviews than Die Hard and Safe Haven, so what happened? Again, the major critics missed the mark on what “entertains” audiences as opposed to simply pulling emotional strings. Critics also gave more of a pass to actors like Jeremy Irons and Emma Thompson. These factors do not translate to box office success. You’ll find this is a common problem among major film critics.
Did well calling Escape From Planet Earth. This prediction ended up being the strongest of the week.  To review, mentioned the film wouldn’t have the backing of say, Monster Vs. Aliens or a Gnomeo And Juliet. Both of those were more more original ideas when they opened. Earth feels re-hashed and previous efforts in this animation style (like Rise Of The Guardians) haven’t exactly been having break out openings lately. Film’s marketing was also pretty stale.
Warm Bodies faced yet another tough weekend (pictured). Really have to feel for this film, in earlier weeks was up against the Super Bowl, an east coast blizzard, and now four major new wide releases. Talk about facing box office challenges. Film does have very positive word of mouth, and did break the 50 million domestic mark.
Fun weekend. Would love to see more like these.
