“Oh man, in the next one we’re being replaced with Smurfs to make money…” – Master Iron Fist

New Year’s Eve Wins. But Doesn’t Impress.

1. New Year’s Eve

Prediction: 24 million. Actual: 13 million. Not a “Valentine’s Day,”

Sensei never was impressed with this one, turned out audiences were even more so. Film wins but came in way under studio and even Sensei’s lowball projection. Overall, just very unimpressive.

Sensei’s streak of calling the correct #1 opener extends to 4 straight weeks.

2. The Sitter

Prediction: 10.5 million. Actual: 9.8 million. Nice call…

Sensei saw a low opening for this one while the other prediction sites had it around the opening around mid teens. Again Sensei shows his act for calling films closer to actual opening potential as opposed to just hype and innuendo.

3. Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part One

Prediction: 8.4 million. Actual: 7.8 million. Once again…

It’s astonishing how close Sensei’s predictions have been on this film since it opened. Again, Sensei’s call falls with a one million range. Master Iron Fist speculates he’s truly a fan in some capacity… That or he’s cursed.

Solid numbers for this. Franchise is very alive and well.

4. Hugo

Prediction: 6.8 million. Actual: #6 with 6 million. Close…

Films #4-6 all ended up less than one million of one another. This one just lost to The Muppets, but impressed nonetheless despite a lower screen count. Will get a chance at Muppets again next week.

5. The Muppets

Prediction: 6.2 million. Actual: #4 with 6.9 million. Has problems…

Film was neck deep in controversy. It’s hard for Sensei to defend a film under-performing that has characters named Tex Richman (who’s an evil rich character, wow, how imaginative) and the like. Sensei is now agreeing with reports out there that a sequel is very unlikely off these numbers.

Sensei cannot stress enough that if you are making a major film, even one for family audiences, you must create a professional project. Otherwise, don’t complain when the numbers are wholly unimpressive.

Until next time,

Sensei White Lotus

  1. [...] this is an epic weekend. Just like that, Sensei now binds a nation’s longest #1 call strain during 4 weeks (along with usually dual other prophecy sites). The rest got tripped adult by “The Muppet’s” [...]

  2. Steel Preist says:

    #1 gets…13 mil!?! Hahahahahaha.

All aboard the ‘bad decisions’ express. Next stop: bankruptcy-ville.

    My turn! My turn!

Sherlock Holmes opens next Friday, so’s I’m calling it the box office winner with a 24 mil. opening weekend.

And definitely Peist, predict away… You’ve been following that film for awhile now.

Priest, you ended up closer than Sensei. Well done. Great prediction.
