Analysis…
The Hobbit did easily repeat this weekend. Film did also break the 150 million domestic mark in only its second week. Not too shabby.
…
Looking at new releases, Jack Reacher did have potential, but also did have that dreaded The Tourist vibe to it. The Tourist also came in below expectations opening to only 16 million in December of 2010, Reacher came in just under. To review, Tom Cruise did considerable damage to his box office resume when Rock Of Ages flopped earlier this year, so he’s not the strongest draw right now anyway.
…
Also as predicted, This Is 40 did suffer from enormous audience anxiety. Turns out the jokes were getting stale in the film’s marketing (which seemed to be everywhere). Monsters Inc 3D did grab what it can from the much diminished 3D format. Turned out to be much more diminished than even I anticipated, film came in half of even my low-ball prediction. Demand just isn’t there for 3D films.
…
The Guilt Trip did suffer from low expectations. Seth Rogen films struggle at the box office when he’s the featured lead (Observe and Report, Zack and Miri, etc.). this was no exception. As predicted, film did greatly disappoint.
…
Despite it’s low screen count (800+ theaters), Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away did post a respectable opening.
…
Twilight Breaking Dawn: Part Two did pass the domestic gross of
Twilight Breaking Dawn: Part One this weekend (281 million,
Part Two now at 282 million). Film is already the
franchise’s most successful entry worldwide (well over 795 million at this point).

Until next time,
