Bold Sensei Predictions For 2013.

————-

With the Super Bowl in the books (great game), time to get set for the rest of the year. In the true spirit of anything goes, here’s five predictions I see outside my usual box office predictions.

1. The Oscar Ratings Will Improve From Last Year.

————-

With a much better nominee list this time around, the Oscars will improve its ratings from previous years.  Look for Argo and Lincoln to duke it out for the top prize of Best Picture. Expect quite a few upsets, especially in both actress categories (leading and supporting).

2. Man Of Steel and Iron Man 3 Look Set, But Hunger Games Sequel Will Reign.

————-

Iron Man 3 and Man Of Steel have the buzz as this year’s early box office front-runners, but both will be passed by The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Superman and Iron Man have a great many abilities, what they don’t have is Jennifer Lawrence.

Katniss - Catching Fire - the-hunger-games-movie PhotoMs. Lawrence is set to be the year’s most successful box office actress. That, as Catching Fire will absorb the Twilight audience, and grab quite a chunk of previous Harry Potter ones. This will create a unheralded box office upset.

Remember, you heard it here first Hunger Games fans. To help with your sequel anticipation, check out this great Katniss poster (pictured right) created by 19-Broken-Destiny-95 over at DeviantART.

3. Nikita Will Get A Fourth Season.

————-

Love this show, and take heart Nikita fans, I see a fourth season well on the way. While the show’s current ratings are factored, as TV By The Numbers points out, “The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe.” Looking good, Nikita.

4. Goodbye “Hollywood Preach Fest.” Hello Concept.

————-

I kid, but whatever you want to call films like Promised Land and the like, say so long. After many years of these films that are basically political documentaries trying to masquerade the structure of a narrative story (Brothers, Green Zone, Lions For Lambs, etc), the box office results have been atrocious.

The signature moment in film development actually came last Spring with the project White House Down (pictured above) getting the green light. What soon followed was the rest of film development moving back toward concept based films. Much as it was at the start of this decade. The box office results have already been pretty strong with films like Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln, Les Miserables pulling in pretty impressive numbers.

5. There Will Definitely Be Another Tron.

————-

I never felt this was in doubt. Tron Legacy did well both domestic and overseas in box office. Already the next one is on the books as Tron Voyage. But the real draw of this film is the chance to experiment with blending animation and live action in a way Walt Disney has never done before. Much like the original Tron came together. This is a rare chance to fully develop new film-making models, while also pulling in high enough box office numbers to cover the cost.

Because of this exciting combination, expect the next Tron to exit rumor central and fully go into development this year.

Thanks for dropping in,
